Product Spotlight: Multi Active Toner

Posted in Product Help by Lucy

What’s Demalogica’s Multi Active Toner For?

Toners are an often-overlooked step in a skincare beauty regime. Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner should be used to refresh and condition the skin, and prepare it for full hydration with a moisturiser.

How Does Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner Work?

The ingredients in Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner are all about soothing and purifying the skin:
- lavender extract is the key ingredient and works as a natural antiseptic
- mint and aloe vera work to cool and sooth the skin
- Sodium PCA – this is a type of humectant (a substance that ‘loves water’) that helps the skin absorb moisture more effectively.

How Should I Use Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner?

Best used as part of your daily skincare cleanse, tone and moisturise regime – we recommend a gentle cleanser like this Ultracalming Cleanser to start, and then follow up with a moisturiser like Dermalogica’s Intensive Moisture Balance.

Who Loves Multi Active Toner?

Jada Pinkett Smith (Will Smith’s beautiful wife) loves Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner and apparently uses it in combination with Dermal Clay Cleanser and Active Moist.

FAQ: I’m a manly man – can I moisturise?

Posted in Skin Solutions by Lucy

Our regular weekly spot where our local Dermalogica skin therapist answers your questions about everything skin.

Your Question: I’m a manly man- can I moisturise?

Carrie: Yes is the answer your looking for – your skin is no different to a woman! That’s good for lots of reasons of course, but it also means that you will age, have dry skin and experience pigmentation – all sorts of reasons to look after your skin and especially to moisturise!

As an extra challenge, men’s facial skin is prone to irritation and dryness because of shaving. Dermalogica have a men’s skin care range out (Dermalogica Shave), which will have everything you need to look after your skin.

Need a treat this Valentines? We have just the thing…

Posted in Beauty News by Lucy

Whatever your haul of cards, flowers and chocolates, Valentines Day can leave your skin feeling a bit unloved.

If you’ve eaten too many heart-shaped chocolates, stayed up past your bedtime or spent a few too many minutes frowning at the letterbox, your skin might need a bit of a pick-me-up. Fortunately, because Dermalogica skincare products come under the title of ‘necessary luxuries’, you don’t need a doting husband or boyfriend to pick up on your hints – just go ahead and treat your skin.

Valentines aside, February can be a really tough time on your skin. Everything from rapidly changing temperatures to the stress of inflation and post-Christmas credit card bills can affect your skin’s health. Here are a few of our favourite Dermalogica products that will help you cope with one of the hardest months of the year:

Daily Microfoliant – ideal for daily use, this oil-free exfoliating powder will, with the lightest possible touch, encourage brighter, healthier skin. As well as removing dull, dead skin cells, this product also works to stimulate cell renewal, another key stage in keeping your skin looking and feeling youthful. Lastly, regular use of Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant will help to reduce skin pigmentation, leaving you with a more even and less damaged-looking complexion.

Daily Resurfacer – this product works particularly well in tandem with the Daily Microfoliant. It can be applied in the evening and used as a leave-on chemical exfoliator. Again, this product will help remove surface debris from the skin, effectively stimulating skin cells and reducing uneven skin tones.

Skin Hydrating Masque – perfect for stressed skin, Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Masque offers intensive moisturisation with an oil-free leave-on lotion. This product can be used either on your whole face and throat, or on problem areas, particularly the eyes.

Dermalogica Treatment Foundation – although Dermalogica is all about skin health, there’s no harm in giving it a little extra boost with a Treatment Foundation. This makeup is one of the lightest formulae you’ll ever have the pleasure of applying, and will help protect and hydrate your skin at the same time as helping to conceal any imperfections.

As well as using products like this to keep your skin looking good this February, it’s also important to look after your overall health. That means eating well, drinking lots of water and having enough time dedicated to rest and relaxation – stress can do really terrible things to your skin!

Product Spotlight: Active Moist

Posted in Product Help by Lucy

What’s Demalogica’s Active Moist For?

Dermalogica’s Active Moist is lightweight and oil-free and is designed to keep oil prone skin safely hydrated without creating that greasy post-moisturised feeling.

How Does Dermalogica’s Active Moist Work?

This product is all about skin hydration without oiliness, and the ingredients that make it work reflect this:
- silk amino acids – also known as silk protein or sericin, this ingredient is extracted from silkworm cocoons. These proteins are renowned for their low molecular weight, which allows them to be absorbed and bond with other substances, in this case, the keratin in our skin. This new layer of molecules helps form a defensive layer against moisture loss.
- lavender, mallow and cucumber extracts – these natural ingredients all provide hydration
- lemon, ivy and burdock extracts – these are known as natural ‘astringents’, which is something that constricts body tissues, in this case making the skin look and feel smoother and more refined.

How Should I Use Dermalogica’s Active Moist?

Active Moist is really easy to use – just apply daily to a damp face and throat, using gentle upward strokes. The product works particularly well with Multi Active Toner.

Who Loves Active Moist?

Julie Sarpong (of T4 fame) swears by it.

Active Moist was also a critical part of Charles Porlier’s (chief make up artist) skincare regime for the cast of The Twilight Saga.

FAQ: I’m starting to show signs of aging on my neck…..HELP!

Posted in AGE Smart - Mature Skin by Lucy

Our regular weekly spot where our local Dermalogica skin therapist answers your questions about every skin.

Your Question: I’m starting to show signs of aging on my neck…..HELP!

Carrie: One of the best ways to stop your skin aging prematurely is to keep it healthy – that means keeping it clean, moisturised and well protected from the sun. However, many people forget to include their neck in their daily beauty regimes, focusing instead only on the face. Your neck skin will be different to that on your face, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look after it. So make sure you cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturise your neck morning and night. You should use light upward movements so that you don’t drag or pull the skin down.

Of course, I can’t recommend Dermalogica’s Age Smart range highly enough if you want to prevent against or counter premature aging on your skin. The Skin Resurfacing Cleanser and Super Rich Repair will help to reduce those signs of aging on your neck and help keep them at bay for even longer!

Product Spotlight: MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque

Posted in Product Help by Lucy

What’s the MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque For?

Dermalogica’s MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque is designed for mature or aging skin and works to improve skin recovery, boost natural barriers and promote healthy cell and tissue regeneration. It’ll also make your skin feel much more elastic.

How Does Dermalogica’s MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque Work?

This product is a masque, so the trick is to leave it on your skin for just the right amount of time – in this case, around ten minutes. During that time, the following ingredients will work some magic:
- a whole alphabet of vitamins (A, C, E, F and B5) will repair and restore any damaged skin;
- oats and algae will soothe and calm your skin while the repairs go on, making sure you walk away from the treatment looking calm, smooth and radiant for days to come.

How Should I Use Dermalogica’s MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque?

For the masque to work best, you need to find a quiet 10 to 15 minutes. First, apply the masque as evenly as possible, avoiding the eye area. Now simply, lie back and relax for a few minutes. Once the time is up, gently wash the masque off with warm water.

You can use this product whenever your skin needs a boost, but a good rule of thumb is to apply it about once a week. It’s a good idea to moisturise your skin further after the treatment – a Dermalogica moisturiser would work best!

Who Loves It?

The MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque has legions of fans, but the most well-known is probably Victoria Beckham; she refers to it as her “little ambulance in a tube”!

FAQ: I have so many little lines around my mout. What can be done?

Posted in Skin Solutions by Lucy

Here’s our regular weekly spot where our local Dermalogica skin therapist answers your questions.

Your Question: I have so many little lines around my mouth. What can be done?

Carrie: Those little lines around the mouth can be a real pain! The best thing you can do straight away is to make sure your skin is properly hydrated – obviously, we’d recommend a Dermalogica moisturiser, probably our Intensive Moisture Masque.

As well as keeping well hydrated, it’s worth investing in some of Dermalogica’s Renewal Lip Complex. This product has vitamin rich emollients to help prevent dehydration and will help to smooth and condition the lip area, stimulating collagen formation and minimising those fine lines.

Product Spotlight: Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel

Posted in Product Help by Lucy

What’s the Special Cleansing Gel For?

Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel is a soap-free gel that foams as you apply it. It’s designed to thoroughly clean your skin with upsetting its natural moisture-balance. This product is perfect if you love that super-clean feeling without that tight feeling you get from many other cleansing style products.

How Does Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel Work?

The Special Cleansing Gel gently foams when you use water and apply it to your skin. This foaming property comes from the ingredient ‘Quillaja Saponaria’, which is the fancy name for extract of tree bark! This tree also goes by the name of ‘Soapbark‘ and can be turned into a powder, which can then be used as an alternative to soap.

The Special Cleansing Gel also contains mint and lavender, both of which help to soothe and purify skin.

How Should I Use Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel?

Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel can be used by itself, but you’ll see best results if you use it as part of a more thorough cleansing, toning and moisturising regime (Precleanse and Multi-Active Toner are often prescribed alongside Special Cleansing Gel by our skin therapists).

To apply, simply dampen your face with a splash of water, squeeze a small amount of gel into your hands and lather, and then apply to your face and neck. Make sure to wash all the foam off with warm water.

Who Loves It?

You mean apart from everyone who tries it? (I’m not kidding – this is easily one of our top products).

We..eelll, Dannii Minogue has said she loves it: “This is my fail-safe, all-in-one way to remove make up and get my skin feeling smooth and soft.”

FAQ: How do I protect against wrinkles?

Posted in AGE Smart - Mature Skin, Skin Solutions by Lucy

Here’s our regular weekly spot where our local Dermalogica skin therapist answers your questions.

Your Question: How do I protect against wrinkles?

Carrie: Wrinkles are induced by daylight exposure. Over 90% of premature aging is caused by ultra violet rays from the sun and lifestyle choices (smoking, stress, diet). That means you need to make sure you use an SPF of at least 15 every day and look at your lifestyle: smoking- give up, diet- improve and stress – make more time for yourself to relax.

The correct use of products for your skin type will really help condition your skin. You will find lots of products especially in Dermalogica AGE Smart range which will help fight premature aging.

Product Spotlight: Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer

Posted in Product Help by Lucy

What’s the Daily Resurfacer For?

Dermalogica’s Daily Resurfacer is designed to chemically smooth skin (without causing any irritation or redness of course) and help reduce the signs of premature aging. By smoothing your skin and helping it stay moist, this product will even your skin tone and brighten your complexion.

How Does the Daily Resurfacer Work?

This is a chemical exfoliant and one of the key ingredients is something called Salicylic Acid. Don’t let that scare you off – it actually comes from the willow tree – names can be deceptive! Another couple of important ingredients are apple and sugar cane; these work together to help stimulate the turnover of cells on your skin’s surface, helping it to look smooth and youthful.

The Daily Resurfacer also contains rooibus as a source of antioxidants and Hyaluronic Acid (commonly known as a ‘goo’ molecule) and seagrass to help with skin hydration.

How Should I Use the Daily Resurfacer?

First things first: don’t use this product if you’re on any medically-prescribed exfoliating products, or if your skin is irritated or particularly sensitive for any reason.

Ideally, you should use the resurfacer in combo with PreCleanse and a cleanser. Use those first and then don the applicator as supplied with the Daily Resurfacer and apply to your face, making sure to focus on any areas of particular concern.

Who Loves It?

Katie Holmes is reputed to adore Dermalogica’s Daily Resurfacer.
Beauty Lauchpad’s Readers’ Choice Award 2009 for ‘Best Skincare Product’.
